Death by Chilli in Saigon

The question that I have been pondering in the last few days is, can a chilli kill?
The reason I have been thinking about this is because a chilli, or a slice of chilli nearly killed me. Well almost.

Hello Moto ...

What do you do as a cuisine when your two closest neighbours are the superstars in the region? Not a lot really, apart from sit back, relax and be enjoyed when people come across you by chance.

Bangkok - Part 1

Bangkok is renowned for its food, especially its street food. Everyone in Bangkok seems to be eating something every moment of the day, whether it be simple grilled chicken or a simple tom sam papaya salad.

Eu Não Falo Português

I didn't know what to expect with Macau. Maybe just another Hong Kong, where everyone works 24/7 making loads of money and spending it just the same.
Thankfully no, Macau, compared to Hong Kong is asleep. Well apart from the Las Vegas style casinos that greet you as you arrive at the Ferry Terminal.

Noodle Heaven

We were led into a false sense of security by our time in Japan, thinking that all noodles were going to be that good.

To Dim Sum or to Yum Cha

You have to do it don't you. When in Rome as they say. Dim Sum or Yum Cha is as Hong Kong as the Peak or the Star Ferry are. You think of one, you think of the other.

Fishy Fishy Fishy Fish !!! or Island Hopping

I really can say that I have never eaten so much seafood in such a short space of time. It has been excellent and I can see it continuing. The seafood that is consumed here in Hong Kong is at the other end of the scale from what we had in Japan, that I cannot begin to describe.

Some Like It Hot !!!

I was quite excited to goto Chili Fagara. I’d done some research and this was reputed to be one of the best Sichuan restaurants on the island.
It is located half way up the steep hill on Graham Street, so you naturally work up a thirst before you get there.

A Good Local Family Restaurant

Since we arrived here in Hong Kong, I have been searching high and low for some of the culinary delights that Hong Kong has to offer… I seem (well most of the time) to be able to spot or search out good eateries… No idea how I do it, but I am sure it is all my belly.
Our kitchen here is pretty damn small and I cannot be arsed to cook everyday, plus my Chinese cooking skills are not that good anyhows, and the million and one restaurants here in Hong Kong can sure as hell cook a more varied amount of food than me. Plus they are much better at it.

The Great Egg Custard Tart Adventure

This obsession I seem to have found for egg custard tarts has to stop. I can feel my waistline increasing with every bite. But the taste of a good sweet shortcut pastry crumbling in my mouth and the custard melting is too much for me to resist.
I have searched high and low for the perfect tart. Finally after tasting most of the tarts that Hong Kong has to offer, I have found it, but to get me there I have had to eat some real bad ones.

The Only Place To Buy Your Fruit 'n' Veg

I have been shopping in two places since we arrived here in Hong Kong. The open market on Graham Street, is by far the most popular one I goto. I just enjoy the hustle n bustle of the place.

It's Curry Time .....

I think this could be an English thing, but every so often if I do not have some form of Indian food, I turn into one miserable git. I crave those delectable tastes, spices and fragrances of a good curry.
We tried a couple of places in Japan for their version of a curry, which were ok, very school dinners. The katsu curry consisted of half a plate of rice with the other half with the curry sauce on and then some form of breaded meat alongside, normally chicken or pork cutlet. As I said they were ok, nice lunchtime train station chow.

We've arrived in Hong Kong

We’ve been firmly entrenched in our small studio apartment in Sheung Wang for 2 weeks now, and it’s brilliant. We really love being here, finally we made it.

Kyoto : City of the Geisha

I didn’t know what to expect from Kyoto, apart from some very fine food. I’d heard that the food was slightly more refined than in Tokyo, and they were not wrong.

Sashimi and Beers

Nara is a small town, close to both Kyoto and Osaka. It was at one point in history the old capital of Japan, this was many centuries ago.

Today it is more famed for the 8 UNESCO sites, so it is very popular on any trip to Japan, it is also very popular with the domestic market as well, so weekends make this town a very crowded place.

Fishy Fishy Fishy Fish

Day 2 in Tokyo, and we had a very early start to see the famous Tsukiji Fish Market. Now this was an incredible sight. There were row upon row and column upon column of stalls selling copious amounts of different types of fish.

Shotgun Noodles Tokyo Style

We arrived into Tokyo after a long 12 hour flight from London, bleary eyed and very hungry. Airline food does not do it for me anymore. I try and eat it less and less.
Somehow we managed to get to Ikebukuro quite easily using Japanese Railways. Checked into our Ryokan and headed out to grab some nosh. Priorities.
